A U.S. district judge handed down an injunction Sept. 1 to prevent a group calling itself the Platters from performing in Lawrence, Mass., according to the Boston Globe. Though Herb Reed, one of two original members of the group that sang "Twilight Time" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," was awarded a judgment in a separate court in 1997 giving him sole rights to the Platters' name, another group has continued to tour under that moniker. ...

Tony Award-winning R&B singer/actress Jennifer Holliday was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from the prestigious Berklee School of Music at the school's convocation Friday (Sept. 8). The singer, who was a member of the original Broadway cast of "Dreamgirls" and has a recurring role on the TV show "Ally McBeal," was joined by rock guitarist Steve Vai in accepting the honorary degrees. ...

Although Destiny's Child insist they remain solid despite their recent personnel changes, the members all are doing individual projects, lead singer Beyoncé Knowles said Sept. 2 at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in Los Angeles. "[Group member Kelly Rowland] just did a duet with Avant, so the great thing is everyone's getting a chance to do their own separate individual things," Knowles said. ...

Victoria Williams' Sweet Relief organization is working on a new project, an album tribute to funk and rock legend Sly Stone. The project is only in the concept stage, but Sweet Relief's Bob Bortnick told the Los Angeles Times that he felt the influences of Sly and the Family Stone, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, would be such that assembling an impressive — and commercially potent — roster of artists to participate in the project should be relatively easily accomplished. Sweet Relief, founded in 1993, strives to raise funds to give financial aid to musicians in need of medical care. Earlier projects have been tributes to songwriters Vic Chesnutt and Williams.
