VMA Report #1: Aaliyah, Eminem Among Early Winners

Early on, things were looking good for Aaliyah at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.

By the time more than half of the nights 20 awards had been handed out — including
pre-telecast awards and those presented live on TV — Aaliyah was the only nominee to have scored multiple wins. The R&B songstress walked off with awards for Best Female Video and Best Video From a Film for "Try Again" (RealVideo excerpt).

Although Aaliyah was the only artist with more than one Moonman, Eminem, with a total of six nominations going into the evening, was catching up to her. The controversial rapper's "The Real Slim Shady" (RealVideo excerpt) grabbed the award for Best Male Video, besting D'Angelo, Kid Rock, Moby and Ricky Martin.

Blink-182 walked off with the first award of the 2000 VMA telecast, grabbing the Best Group Video trophy for "All the Small Things" (RealVideo excerpt). Macy Gray also came out of the gates strong, landing Best New Artist in a Video honors for "I Try" (RealVideo excerpt).

Jennifer Lopez got in on the winning early, taking home the award for Best Dance Video with "Waiting for Tonight" (RealVideo excerpt), which topped clips from Britney Spears, *NSync, Ricky Martin and Sisqó.

Icelandic experimentalist Björk's video for "All Is Full of Love" (RealVideo excerpt) took home the Breakthrough Video award before the VMA telecast went live at 8 p.m. EDT. (Sonicnet.com's parent company, Viacom, also owns MTV.)

Also before the main ceremony, hard-rockers Papa Roach belted out their hit song "Last Resort" (RealAudio excerpt) atop the marquee of the Radio City Music Hall.

With his bandmates surrounded by billows of smoke, Papa Roach frontman Coby Dick smashed the mic against his head and leaned into the song's " 'Cause I'm losing my sight/ Losing my mind" refrain before the performance culminated in a explosion of streamers.

A little more than an hour later, the sun set and the band returned to rip through "Broken Home," a raucous ode to a family split.
